An exploration of the Tarot’s mystical roots, with a guide to The Tarot of Marseilles, The Waite Smith Tarot, The Alchemical Tarot, and The Tarot of the Sevenfold Mystery.
When my The Tarot, History, Symbolism, and Divination was published by Tarcher/Penguin, the publisher printed a small run of books first, before the main printing. These were sent out to potential reviewers, but one of the main reasons for this printing was to look it over and weed out the typos that reveal themselves once the book is in print.
The first edition of The Tarot, Magic, Alchemy, Hermeticism, and Neoplatonism was like that first run. Now that the typos have been corrected I have printed a larger run of books. This is The Tarot, Magic, Alchemy, Hermeticism, and Neoplatonism, Second Edition. The Second edition is available for $40 plus shipping.
The Tarot, Magic, Alchemy, Hermeticism, and Neoplatonism Second Edition incorporates the material that was in Alchemy and the Tarot and The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination, but updates the facts and, as you can tell by the title, covers a lot more material—about three times as much, with 680 pages and over 300 illustrations.
This is a fantastic book and covers the topic in a great deal of detail. I spent decades learning a lot of this stuff, I wish someone had sent this back in time, it would have saved me a lot of time! 🙂
Seriously, this is a great resource and I consider it a must-have for anyone doing tarot who wants to learn about the history and foundations of tarot and related topics. It has greatly expanded my thinking on the topic.
This is a great book for anyone wanting to broaden their knowledge of Tarot. I’d also recommend picking up either Robert’s Alchemical Tarot or his Sevenfold Mystery Tarot as a companion to the book.
The Second Edition is $40 plus shipping: $8 in the US, $26 for Canada, and $38 for other international orders
For US orders, the book order can be combined with an order for The Alchemical Tarot ($30), The Tarot of the Sevenfold Mystery ($30), or both decks ($60) for no additional shipping cost
For Canadian orders the combined shipping cost for the book and one or two decks is $48. For all other international orders the combined shipping cost is $70.

This book is amazing .I finally want to study tarot;it goes back even to Egypt,I can follow the real history, and from the Hermetic Tradition, and really study the tarot as a path.
Soon to be available as an ebook
This book has a place of honour on my shelf. I only got it last year and I’ve just about worn the spine through and creased so many corners from flips. It’s truly a Bible among Tarot books. Thank you sir.
Three weeks old and it looks like I’ve had it for the 30years I’ve been doing this. The spine is shot, notes in margins and sticky flags are the devils incarnation I swear. LOL
Both editions of The Tarot, Magic, Alchemy, Hermeticism, and Neoplatonism incorporate the material that was in Alchemy and the Tarot and The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination, but update the facts and, as you can tell by the title, covers a lot more material—about three times as much, with 680 pages and over 300 illustrations.
These books are intended to be a guide to my Alchemical Tarot and my Tarot of the Sevenfold Mystery. They are the companion books for both decks. But they also cover the Tarot of Marseilles and The Waite Smith Tarot. So that they are a guide to the Tarot for anyone using any deck. Each chapter starts with a full-page illustration on the left hand page and the text on the right hand page. The first two pages of each chapter are illustrated below:
